Salvatore Cuschera was born in Scarlino, in the province of Grosseto, in 1958. He graduated in sculpture from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and, from 1990 onwards, began exhibiting his works in group and solo exhibitions. He took his first trip to Greece, where he visited Crete and its museums, studying Greek sculpture and Minoan-Mycenaean art in depth. He later traveled to the Netherlands and Germany, where he came into contact with the works of Bauhaus artists and deepened his knowledge of Russian Constructivism. Back in Italy, he created his first colored iron sculptures, synthesizing his interest in painting, sculpture, and architecture, and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In Gibellina, he took part in the Atelier del Mediterraneo alongside Markus Lüpertz, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, and, thanks to Pietro Consagra, he created his first public sculpture for the Municipality of Gibellina. He won several awards and participated in important group exhibitions such as the 14th Rome Quadrennial of Art, the 54th Venice Biennale, where he presented an installation in the Arsenale Gardens, and "Ceramica Now! 60th Faenza Prize" at the MIC - International Museum of Ceramics.
In 2018, two of his sculptures were selected to be exhibited at the Farnesina, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. In the same year, a monographic book on his work, curated by Giuseppe Appella, was published by Silvana Editoriale. In 2019, he created three large sculptures for the park of the Farleys House & Gallery, Home of the Surrealists, in Chiddingly, East Sussex (UK). In 2022, one of his sculptures was included in an exhibition project at the Horti del Collegio Borromeo in Pavia. In 2023, he participated in the exhibition "E la mia Patria è dove l'erba trema: 45 artists reinterpret the work of Rocco Scotellaro" at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. In the spring of 2024, he exhibited his latest works in a solo show at the Paula Seegy Gallery in Milan, curated by Luigi Sansone.
His latest solo exhibition, Geometrie spirituali – Il presepe arcobaleno, featuring wooden sculptures and works on paper, was held at the former Church of Madonna di Loreto at the Malatesta Castle in Longiano. The exhibition was curated by the Fondazione Tito Balestra Onlus, the Vanni Scheiwiller International Nativity Museum in Castronuovo Sant’Andrea, and Longiano dei Presepi 2024 (December 8, 2024 – January 12, 2025).
